The Amaranth Oubliette

The Amaranth Oubliette is a role-playing game for a single player. Chapter I: O Brave One describes how to make a character, while Chapter II: Into the Oubliette explains how to explore the rooms and corridors of the oubliette. Chapter III: Death, Perennial provides the rules of combat and Chapter IV: Accoutrements details the various items that can help you on your quest. Chapter V: Lo, the Denizens is a bestiary of the deadly monsters that lurk in the oubliette.

A plague will erupt by the next moon, taking nigh half of every living soul with it. That’s what the rumors around Nexus say, anyway. Some of the physicks insist that past patterns of plague and blight are mere coincidence, while the soothsayers point their crooked fingers to the stars, insisting that the alignment of the planets foretells the deadliest sickness in centuries... a fate for even the dead to fear.

But there is hope.

The ancient fables of Nexus tell of the Amaranth, an ancient relic once plucked by an alchemist who was immured long ago in a bizarre, labyrinthine dungeon deep underground. The promise of this ancient cure has driven you, O Brave One, to descend into this strange and maddening place.

You descend through misty, foul-smelling air into utter blackness, landing on crooked stones with a cracking sound that echoes off the ancient walls. With a decisive strike of blade against flint, you light your torch and hold it aloft, peering into the depths of the infinite tomb that is now your world…
